Online Interactive Learning
Motivational Interviewing through the Lens of Poverty
January 2025

In this unique workshop, we’ll be exploring Motivational Interviewing through the lens of poverty. Join us for this exciting opportunity with Stephen Andrew and special guest trainer Linda Riddell, founder of Health Economy LLC and the experiential poverty game “Gettin’ By” that puts your brain through the same changes that happen to a person living in poverty.
Join us for a life-changing conversation that looks at the client-centered, evidence-based practice of Motivational Interviewing (a style of communication rooted in compassion, collaboration, and acceptance) through the eyes of poverty, health, and oppression. Kindness can be brought into action every single day to help alleviate the suffering and shame in others. Acting with compassion skillfully is vital and most likely to be helpful.

In this workshop, we’ll:

  • Introduce you to the underlying spirit and structure of Motivational Interviewing

  • Explore the principles of MI with practical exercises that guide participants in strengthening their empathy skills, recognizing and eliciting client change-talk, and rolling with resistance. When we practice radical compassion with others, we use active empathetic listening and strive to build a working alliance with the people we serve.

In this workshop, we’ll explore:

  • Moving from feeling responsible for changing a person’s behavior, to supporting them in their own reasons and means for behavior change

  • Holding a person’s suffering as well as their dreams for their life with radical acceptance and empathy to watch them transform beautifully.
